Minor problems like these did not discourage the European and American scholars of the time. Thousands of pages of the Hindu's own historical records were simply dismiss as fiction.
These white scholars were sure a virile race of white warriors, much like themselves, had invaded India. The Veda mentioned a people called the Aryans, "the noble ones".
They spoke a language related to German, Russian, Italian, and English. They worshipped deities who sounded quite a bit like some of the gods in the old European pagan tradition. Obviously then, they were proto-Europeans. And one of the symbols they frequently used in their religious art was a twisted cross called a swastika. They must have been the invaders who destroyed the ancient cities!
This theory of ancient white-skinned proto-Europeans sweeping across the eastern world establishing a vibrant new culture appealed to many Europeans in the 1930s-Adolph Hitler for example. Hitler borrowed the term "Aryan" from the Veda and adopted the Swastika, too, for his own campaign of world domination.
